Portland-based Pendulum Dance Theatre has been bringing aerial arts and contemporary circus to the local landscape for a decade. Recently rechristened Pendulum Aerial Arts to better represent their unique performance brand, the company is looking to the future with their new production High Art: A Surreal Portrait of the Soul, to be presented August 19-22 in partnership with the Portland Art Museum.

Told through Pendulum’s signature aerial work, High Art takes the audience through the cycle of life using canvas and paint as metaphors for how our personalities and interactions are shaped. Each of the show’s eight acts are inspired by a work of fine art from a 20th century master. Echoing the human and artistic need to add layers without sacrificing clarity and authenticity, High Art offers a revealing look into the nuanced depths of the soul.

To rise to the challenge of interpreting visual art in the physical medium of contemporary aerial performance, Pendulum has brought in some of the big guns of the arts world to give the company’s locally-based performers fresh insight and inspiration.

The original score for High Art is being contributed by New York chanteuse Sasha Lazard and world renowned drummer, Ya’el, with contributions from cello prodigy David Eggar. Pendulum also created original aerial equipment and commissioned choreography from long-time collaborating artists across North America and Europe.
