Portland Baroque Orchestra Music
fit for kings, queens and cardinals, but don’t worry, we
aren’t collecting taxes! Long before arts councils,
political leaders surrounded themselves with artistic
treasures—and what a trove they amassed: Ballet for Louis
XIV, volumes by Haydn, and centuries of sacred music.
Sometimes the nobles simply wanted to display their
wealth, but more often they recognized the arts as
humanity’s riches. Many 18th-century aristocrats studied
and performed music themselves, setting an example for the
era’s growing middle class and our own society. So
transport yourself to the grand halls of Versailles,
Sanssouci, Esterhaza and Rome and let us bring to you the
musical riches of Lully, Bach, Handel, Mozart and many
more.
